Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is Uganda’s most famous gorilla trekking destination and is home to roughly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
The park has four main trekking sectors:
Buhoma
Located in northern Bwindi, Buhoma is the original gorilla trekking sector and has well-established tourism infrastructure.
It is an excellent option for first-time gorilla trekkers.
Ruhija
Ruhija is located in eastern Bwindi and is particularly attractive to travelers interested in both gorillas and birdwatching.
Rushaga
Located in southern Bwindi, Rushaga is an important gorilla trekking area and is also associated with the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Nkuringo
Nkuringo is located in southern Bwindi and is known for its dramatic mountain scenery and more challenging terrain.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga is Uganda’s second gorilla trekking destination.
Located in the Virunga Mountains, the park offers a different atmosphere from Bwindi’s dense forest. The landscape is dominated by volcanic mountains and beautiful highland scenery.
Mgahinga currently provides a smaller-scale gorilla trekking experience, with approximately eight permits issued per day according to Uganda Wildlife Authority information.

A gorilla permit is mandatory for anyone participating in gorilla trekking.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Uganda’s gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year.
However, the June–September and December–February periods are generally popular because conditions are often drier and trekking trails can be easier to navigate. Wet-season trekking is also possible and offers lush forest scenery, but trails may become muddy and slippery.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is a physically active experience.
The trek may take several hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes the activity as requiring moderate fitness, with treks potentially lasting 2–7 hours.
You should be prepared for:
